JotSpot - new Wiki concept

Brief article about JotSpot in today's Guardian Online (p20). The editing works like Word and there are online applications that can be used with it. It is not free but it is possible to have a 90 day Beta test login. Most of their suggested uses seem pretty corporate - recruitment, project management, company intranet but I think the concept sounds good and there must be opportunities from a learning technology/ teaching and learning angle that we could explore. Not sure what though at the moment.

Final summary for WebCT conference

An information skills tutorial, EXPERTease, hosted within WebCT, was developed by Edge Hill. Success was achieved in the 2003 Times Higher/ LTSN eTutor of the Year competition. Scaling up and embedding across subjects has been enabled with a toolkit to support staff with the tutorial’s administration, adaptation, delivery and moderation. Included as a ‘hidden’ content module within EXPERTease, user feedback shows this model has potential for wider use within the institution’s WebCT courses. (73 words)

WebCT conference submission summary

Here is my offering for the 75 word summary that we need. Actually, it is only 74!

What do you think?

Not sure about 'demonstrates'. Any other suggestions? Indicates? Suggests? Proves? Shows? Recommends?

Google opens a new chapter

Looks like an interesting move for GoogleGoogle opens a new chapter

We'll need another INFORMS!

blinkx

Just downloaded blinkx again and let it index all my files on the laptop. It seems a lot better than before.

Once everything is indexed it the search is so quick, it is amazing.

Why not give it a go. Unfortunately it will only do local drives so I don't think it will work at work.

Or is it a framwork ...?

A framework is an extensible structure for describing a set of concepts, methods, technologies, and cultural changes necessary for a complete product design and manufacturing process. Framework products are most prevalent in the area of Electrical and Electronic design. Frameworks provide a mechanism that guides users through a proper order of steps, applications, and data conversions via a common interface to the process being followed. cedar.web.cern.ch/CEDAR/glossary.html

JISCINFONET - evalKit

What are toolkits?
"Toolkits are decision-making frameworks based on expert models. They generally aim to deliver improvement for their users' practice by supporting them in assessing and improving outcomes for both individual and institutional practice."

Not really a definition that suits ours but I don't think that is a problem.

Third draft of WebCT Conference abstract

This is the third draft of the abstract - 5th October 2004

Theme: Enabling learning: Effective instructional practices and flexible design models

An information skills tutorial, EXPERTease, hosted within WebCT, was developed as a project within the key skills strand of Edge Hill’s HEFCE funded COMET project. The tutorial achieved success in the 2003 Times Higher/ LTSN eTutor of the Year competition. The development brought together information professionals and learning technologists to incorporate an understanding of pedagogical and technological issues into the finished product. Nevertheless, much incidental learning occurred due to the team’s organic, constructivist approach, focusing on the probable experience of the user.

Sharing knowledge gained through the development process, scaling up and embedding the tutorial within a range of subject curricula was enabled by the creation of a toolkit. The toolkit supports staff in administration, adaptation, delivery and moderation of the tutorial. To ensure that detailed instructional materials are to hand at point of need, the toolkit is included as a ‘hidden’ content module within EXPERTease tutorials and the project team has carefully evaluated use. This model has potential for wider use within the Institution’s WebCT courses.

Workshop participants will access the tutorial and toolkit, and share the evaluation and lessons learned. There will also be an opportunity for participants to exchange their experiences of developing and using similar toolkits.
