Alt-C themes

The growth and spread of current e-learning research and development has led to settled and well established areas of knowledge and expertise in a variety of domains as well as a number of unexplored or undeveloped areas. This year's conference aims to focus on the challenges and opportunities presented by these frontiers and in particular to explore:
  • How we cross the borders between domains;
  • Where the boundaries of knowledge and expertise lie;
  • Which groups or sectors can effect migration towards new frontiers and outposts as well as cross-fertilisation.

We invite papers and abstracts for these under the following 5 themes:

  • Design and development;
  • Quality and standards;
  • Architectures and infrastructures;
  • Implementation (including staff and organisational development);
  • Collaboration (including cross-sectoral partnerships).

10 Questions for writing a proposal

The "Writing for Academic Journals" book has these questions to ask when wanting to write a proposal for a paper.

1. This work needed to be done because ... 25 words
2. Those who will benefit from this include ... 25 words
3. What I did was ... 25 words
4. How I did that was by ... 25 words
5. When I did that what happened was ...50 words
6. I worked out what that meant by ... 50 words
7. I did what I set out to do by the extent that ...25 words
8. The implications for research are ...25 words
9. The implications for practice are ... 25 words
10. What still needs to be done is ... 25 words

If we substitute the "I" for the "project" it might work.

About the EXPERTease article

I nearly missed your blue text!

I'll send the article Friday - see what you think. I've thrown everything at it in the hope that some of it will stick ok. I think it needs a few references to the 'literature' at the beginning. Also, we need to explain how the tutorial copes with both novice and expert learners. We need info from the Info Systems versions - usage stats. as this is a version delivered by Rebecca Kelly and not us. We also need to expand on the development process - a heading for each section of the Kolb cycle perhaps?
I've also had a thought about how we could make finding older bits of the blog easier ... we decide on a few categories - literature, development, WebCT etc and have them as a list at the side for reference only. When composing, ensure a category heading is included somewhere so when keyword searching, all category items are retrieved. Voila! Or is it too anal and librarian?

Last phase of the project

I think we should put all Expertease/toolkit thoughts onto the blog from now on so we have a record of the processes we have followed. Having said that, there are already 70 entries on this blog between us.

I have been looking at the draft article we have been working on and have added substantially to it. It hasn't taken much work as I have been able to incorporate material I have written for other papers. Starting to feel the benefit now! It will need substantial revision to tie it all together and make it read easily.

It occurs to me that if we can get something ready before the WebCT conference, we could get published fairly quickly afterwards while it was fresh in people's minds and before the end of the COMETproject.

Mark: That sounds great. What do you want me to do? Will you send me what you have done already, please?
